Your contraceptive light
Male contraception: End of study project at the Digital Lab of L'École de Design Nantes Atlantique.
The challenge
Contraception can be a source of conflict within couples, due to its sometimes anxiety-provoking and individual use by the woman. Contraception is presented as a means of controlling fertility by being one with its user, but it concerns both partners. The transition from individual contraception to conjugal contraception is complex, since contraceptive methods are conceived on an individual basis, both in use and in experience. So how can complicity be generated between two partners in the contraceptive act? The pill is the contraceptive method most used by French women, which is why I am focusing on this oral method to carry out my project.

La contraception peut être source de conflit au sein des couples, de par son usage parfois anxiogène et individuel supporté par la femme. La contraception est présentée comme un moyen de contrôler la fertilité en ne faisant qu’un avec son utilisateur, or elle concerne les deux partenaires. Le passage de la contraception individuelle à la contraception conjugale est complexe puisque les moyens contraceptifs sont pensés à titre individuel, tant dans l’usage que dans l’expérience. Alors comment générer de la complicité entre deux partenaires dans l’acte contraceptif ? La pilule est le moyen contraceptif le plus utilisé par les françaises, c'est pourquoi je me concentre sur cette méthode orale pour réaliser mon projet.

Project
Lumi is a contraceptive light that accompanies couples in taking oral contraception. It ensures and soothes the follow-up of this contraception. Its lighting indicates when the pill is taken. Accompanied by an application, Lumi facilitates medical procedures, advises if you forget to take the pill and provides information on how to take it. Its visibility allows the man to be included in the couple's contraceptive responsibility. It helps to share the contraceptive work between two partners and thus frees the woman from a significant mental burden.
Lumi est un luminaire contraceptif qui accompagne les couples dans la prise de la contraception orale. Il assure et apaise le suivi de cette contraception. Son éclairage est indicateur de la prise de la pilule. Accompagné d'une application, Lumi facilite les démarches médicales, conseille en cas d'oubli de pilule et informe sur la prise de celle-ci. Sa visibilité permet d'inclure l'homme dans la responsabilité contraceptive du couple. Il aide à partager le travail contraceptif entre deux partenaires et ainsi, libère la femme d'une charge mentale conséquente.
User Journey
Form and material
Lumi represents in its form the fertility of the couple through two entities that cohabit: two superimposed organic forms recalling both the ovum, the cycle of a woman, and the communication between two partners. Its front surface is covered with a black silicone: a material that is pleasant to the touch, indicative of interaction with the user. Its back surface is made of a metal plate such as silver, copper or aluminum so as to reflect the light.
Lumi représente dans sa forme la fertilité du couple à travers deux entités qui cohabitent : deux formes organiques superposées rappelant à la fois l'ovule, le cycle d'une femme, et la communication entre deux partenaires. Sa surface avant est vêtue d'un silicone noir : matière agréable au touché, indicatrice d’interaction avec l'usager. Sa surface arrière est constituée d'une plaque de métal tel que l'argent, le cuivre ou encore l'aluminium de telle sorte à réfléchir la lumière.

Two plates adapted to the shape of the plate of your pill are sold separately from the pillbox to facilitate its filling. These two plates, with the brand name of your pill, allow you to perforate your pill pack in one go. Thus, Lumi adapts to each contraceptive pill.

Deux plaques adaptées à la forme de la plaquette de votre pilule sont vendues à part du pilulier pour faciliter son remplissage. Ces deux plaques de la marque de votre pilule permettent de perforer d'une traite votre plaquette de pilule. Ainsi, Lumi s'adapte à chaque pilule contraceptive.
Prototype
After determining my mechanisms for the proper functioning of my pillbox, I then made a prototype of my object. The front surface of the pillbox was created in 3D printing, and the back surface was made of wood in a workshop. Then, the lighting of the led strip and the button to vary this light were realized with Arduino.
Après avoir déterminé mes mécanismes pour le bon fonctionnement de mon pilulier, j'ai ensuite réalisée un prototype de mon objet. La surface avant du pilulier a été créée en impression 3D, et la surface arrière a été réalisée en bois dans un atelier. Ensuite, l'éclairage de la bande led et le bouton faisant varié cette lumière ont été réalisé à l'aide d'Arduino.
